Problem and Solution
Kenya’s growing population presents a dual challenge: ensuring adequate nutrition while managing food waste effectively. Smallholder farmers cannot access affordable organic fertilizers and quality livestock feed to meet the rising demand for high-protein produce, while organic waste often ends up in uncontrolled landfills.
InsectiPro believes that insects can be a crucial part of the solution, with their inherent ability to recycle waste for circular food and feed value chains. By cultivating the Black Soldier Fly, InsectiPro produces dried insects for animal feed and frass fertilizer, using waste that would otherwise be landfilled. Applying the same technology, they also produce crickets fed from organic streams as a high-protein snack for human consumption. Due to extensive R&D, the company has created scalable, decentralised production models.
Climate and Nature Impact
InsectiPro’s circular production model allows the company to divert waste from landfills and reduce GHG emissions, contributing to climate mitigation. Their affordable frass fertilizer has been proven to combat soil degradation and boost yields, supporting climate resilience. Cultivating insects for animal and human nutrition also requires significantly less water, land, and feed than soy or animal alternatives. These products alleviate the competition for raw materials to feed communities, improving food security.
Fundraising and Expansion Plan
InsectiPro is raising USD 3 million in funding to scale production through its franchise model and commercialize new high-margin products such as liquid fertilizers. This would require sourcing more waste, establishing a four-product BSF production line, and enhancing quality and certification to commercialize new offerings.
